Motherhood changes Keri Russell’s outlook

Keri Russell’s “comeback year” has the feel of a reinvention, a re-branding of the dainty young lovely who burst on the scene with “Felicity” back in the past century.

But as different as her flinty mom in the new film “Dark Skies” (not previewed for critics) might seem, as dangerous and “out there” as her Born Again Bolshevik sleeper spy is in TV’s “The Americans,” she refuses to label her return to public view a career makeover.

“The great think about disappearing is that people forget about you a little bit,” Ms. Russell says. “Your past is forgotten. You can come back as something fresh and new.

“These past two years, I’ve come back to all these interesting things that people might not have thought about me for in the past. They just happened.”

She stepped away from film and TV half a dozen years ago, getting married and giving birth to two children, who are now 1 and 5. At 36, she’s a different person — a mom, for starters. And it’s made her a different actress. Continue reading Motherhood changes Keri Russell’s outlook

Keri Russell thrilled to navigate ‘Dark Skies’

The name of Keri Russell’s new film may be “Dark Skies,” but in reality, the light is shining brighter than ever on the acclaimed actress’ already successful career.

In a recent interview, Russell told me that she’s read several scripts in the horror and supernatural thriller genre, but there was really nothing that piqued her interest until the script for writer-director Scott Stewart’s “Dark Skies” rolled overhead.

“It’s one of those scripts that I read and instantly thought, ‘That’s going to work.’ It has all the rights for me. It’s scary, but fun scary, but at the core, it was like a family drama,” Russell said. “For me, those are the kinds of movies I like, where you believe in the family, first, to set things up, and then things start happening — like in a ‘Poltergeist’ vein. That’s more of what we were targeting.”

Opening in theaters nationwide on Friday, Russell and Josh Hamilton star as Lacy and Daniel Barrett, a pair of suburban parents whose peaceful existence is turned into a living nightmare as a mysterious alien presence invades their home and preys upon them. FX Renews ‘The Americans’ for Season 2

FX is sticking with The Americans.

The freshman drama, created by Joe Weisberg, has been renewed for a 13-episode sophomore season. The news follows especially high ratings for the January premiere and significant DVR growth throughout its first month on the air.

“The Americans has quickly established itself as a key part of FX’s acclaimed drama lineup,” said network president and GM John Landgraf. “Executive producers Joe Weisberg, Joel Fields and Graham Yost and their collaborators are telling riveting and deeply emotional stories, and the performances of Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys, Noah Emmerich and the entire cast are simply outstanding. The show is truly worthy of its widespread critical acclaim, and we are confident that its quality will continue to yield a robust and passionate audience.”

With Live+7 day returns, The Americans’ pilot episode has pulled in a total of 5.11 million viewers — a network record for a series debut. And though the second episode saw a drop in Live+Same day returns, DVR growth has been consistently strong. The first three episodes have jumped a respective 44 percent, 58 percent and 68 percent.

“We’re very grateful to John Landgraf, Nick Grad, Eric Schrier and everyone at FX for their unwavering support of our show,” said Weisberg. “We’re thrilled to be able to continue writing stories for such an incredibly talented cast led by Keri, Matthew and Noah. This has been an amazing experience for me, and it couldn’t have happened without the tireless efforts of our cast and crew. We appreciate the support of the audience, and we believe they have a lot to look forward to the rest of this season.”

Set during the 1980s, Americans follows a seemingly normal couple (Russell and Rhys) in suburban Washington, D.C. In reality, they’re deep-undercover KGB spies trying to infiltrate the U.S. during the Cold War. Even their children don’t know their real agenda.

“We couldn’t have made it happen without the constant support of Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank at Amblin TV, David Madden at Fox Television Studios and Eric Schrier at FX Productions and their wonderful teams as well,” added Fields.

Americans’ critical reception has been overwhelmingly positive. The Hollywood Reporter’s chief TV critic Tim Goodman gave a glowing review of the first two episodes, writing, “Comparisons with Homeland are inevitable, but the pacing and nuance driving FX’s look at enemies among us might have real staying power.”

Nine episodes remain in Americans’ freshman run. It airs at 10 p.m. on FX.

What Scares ‘Dark Skies’ Star Keri Russell?

Do bumps in the night scare Keri Russell? The Dark Skies star is a self-confessed “scaredy cat” and tells ET that despite being jumpy, “There is something thrilling about being scared.”

“I guess I don’t see a lot of scary movies because I get scared so easy, but … going to a scary movie is so fun,” she tells ET. “You know what’s about to happen – it’s terrifying and exciting and good all at once, and it was so fun to go [to this movie] with my girlfriends and they screamed at all the right places.”

In theaters Friday, Dark Skies stars Keri and Josh Hamilton as suburban parents whose safe, secure existence is shattered by a supernatural force. As they witness an escalating series of disturbing events involving their family, skepticism of an abusive household grows around them, and soon they must take matters in their own hands to protect their family and solve the mystery of what is after them.

“Wild imagination helps with [watching] these movies,” adds Keri.

Watch the video to see how the Dark Skies star (who also headlines The Americans on FX) manages to balance work and motherhood. Is there a secret?

Q&A: Keri Russell talks on-screen oral sex and what it’s like to play a Russian spy on The Americans

When she was 15 years old, Keri Russell was cast on the All-New Mickey Mouse Club. For the next three years, the fresh-faced youngster came of age alongside Ryan Gosling, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, forming the base of what could retroactively be described as the modern American pop culture landscape. All of which makes Russell’s latest foray into that culture so intriguing.

Twenty years after she landed America’s signature kids program, Russell is playing Elisabeth Jennings, a Cold War-era Washington D.C. Stepford wife who leads a double life as a KGB spy. As if to hammer the point home, the new FX series The Americans opens with Russell, best known as the soft-hearted Felicity in the romantic dramedy series of the same name, performing fellatio on an unsuspecting American target.

The Mickey Mouse Club, it certainly is not.

We caught up with Russell to discuss her return to dramatic television, memories of the Cold War and her most sexually graphic role to date. Continue reading Q&A: Keri Russell talks on-screen oral sex and what it’s like to play a Russian spy on The Americans
