Cocaine Bear is inspired by a true story from 1985 where a convicted drug smuggler named Andrew C. Thornton II threw a duffel bag full of cocaine out of a plane he was piloting to get rid of some weight. A bear found the duffel bag and ingested all of its contents, and the drug smuggler died when he jumped out of the plane with a faulty parachute. The bear was found dead three months later next to 40 plastic containers.
Cocaine Bear hits theaters on February 24.

First trailer for Elizabeth Banks’ Cocaine Bear
In the film’s wild first trailer, a drug kingpin (played by late actor Ray Liotta in his final role) tasks two of his mercenaries — (Alden Ehrenreich and O’Shea Jackson Jr.) with tracking down and recovering the lost cocaine. The duo’s mission takes an unexpected turn when they discover a bear has gotten to it first — and he seems hungry for more.
“The bear, it f—ing did cocaine,” Ehrenreich shouts at Liotta. “A bear did cocaine!”
“Let’s see what kind of effect that has on him,” adds Isiah Whitlock Jr., speaking for us all.
Elsewhere in the trailer, a concerned mother, played by Keri Russell, tries to find her lost daughter (Brooklynn Prince) and her friend (Christian Convery), who were hanging out together in the woods, unaware of the cocaine bear on the loose.
Banks, who previously directed 2015’s Pitch Perfect 2 and the 2019 Charlie’s Angels reboot, is joined in the, uh, high-stakes drama by Game of Thrones’ Kristofer Hivju, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ice Cube, Matthew Rhys, and Margo Martindale. Cocaine Bear is written by Jimmy Warden (Netfilx’s The Babysitter: Killer Queen) and produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie).

Universal Sets True Story ‘Cocaine Bear’ for 2023 Release
Universal Pictures will release the new film “Cocaine Bear” on Friday, Feb. 24, 2023 in theaters wide, the studio announced on Monday.
Wild as it may seem, the film is inspired by the 1985 true story of a drug runner’s plane crash, missing cocaine, and the black bear that ate it. Per the official synopsis, the thriller finds an oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converging in a Georgia forest where a 500- pound apex predator has ingested a staggering amount of cocaine and gone on a coke-fueled rampage for more blow… and blood.
Elizabeth Banks directed “Cocaine Bear” from a screenplay by Jimmy Warden (“The Babysitter 2: Killer Queen”). The cast includes Keri Russell, Margo Martindale, Ray Liotta, Alden Ehrenreich, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Kristofer Hivju (“Game of Thrones”), Kahyun Kim (“American Gods”), Christian Convery (“Sweet Tooth”), Brooklynn Prince (“The Florida Project”) and newcomer Scott Seiss.
This is Banks’ third feature directorial effort after making her debut with 2015’s “Pitch Perfect 2,” followed by Sony’s 2019 reboot “Charlie’s Angels” starring Kristen Stewart.
The February release date for “Cocaine Bear” puts it one week after the release of the Marvel sequel “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and one week before Paramount’s “Dungeons & Dragons” movie.
“Cocaine Bear” is produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (“Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse”) and Aditya Sood (“The Martian”) for Lord Miller, by Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman (“Pitch Perfect” franchise) for Brownstone Productions, and by Brian Duffield (“Spontaneous”). Robin Fisichella (“Ma”) and Nikki Baida executive produced.

Keri Russell To Headline Netflix’s Political Thriller Series ‘The Diplomat’
Keri Russell (The Americans, Felicity) has been tapped for the title role in The Diplomat, Netflix’s drama series created by Debora Cahn. Russell also will executive produce the series alongside Cahn and Janice Williams.
In The Diplomat, whose order is for eight 50-minute episodes, in the midst of an international crisis, career diplomat Kate Wyler (Russell) lands in a high-profile job she’s unsuited for, with tectonic implications for her marriage and her political future.
Cahn serves as executive producer and showrunner under her overall deal with Netflix. The Diplomat is slated to film in the UK.
For six seasons, Russell starred in the acclaimed FX series The Americans which earned her three Emmy nominations. She next stars in Cocaine Bear for director Elizabeth Banks and Extrapolations for director, writer and producer Scott Burns. Russell is repped by WME, The Burstein Company and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern.

Adam Granduciel and Keri Russell Celebrate The War On Drugs’ New Chapter
Most of us will have a War On Drugs moment at some point in our lives. Over five zeitgeist-altering albums—epic in their emotional scope and sonic depth—the Philly-born band has earned a reputation for encapsulating the near-univeral sense of uneasiness and exuberance of coming of age. Formed in 2005, the band has become a cornerstone of contemporary Americana, and has collaborated with the likes of Kurt Vile, Sharon Van Etten, and The National. For Adam Granduciel, the band’s lead guitarist and front man, shepherding The War On Drugs in its various configurations has been the singular focus of the past 15 years. “There was a beautiful aimlessness to that time,” he recalls on a recent Zoom call, “But I wouldn’t want to go back to being 23.” This shift is evident in I Don’t Live Here Anymore, the latest of the band’s five albums, out last week, which embraces a certain rock n’ roll jubilance that was scarce on previous records. The new record offers bite-sized melodies and tighter lyrics where albums like 2008’s Slave Ambient or 2010’s Lost in the Dream thrummed with expansive guitar riffs and stifled, impossible-to-encapsulate feeling. Granduciel attributes his new sound to the birth of his son, Bruce.
