ABC’s streaming service is trying to become a new version of itself, to paraphrase that (second, lesser) theme song from Felicity. Today, the network relaunched its streaming service, available in the App Store, with free access to full seasons of 38 network programs, including My So-Called Life, Sports Night, Ugly Betty, and Felicity.
The service will also host seven new short-form series, including shows with Ty Burrell and Iliza Shlesinger, and continue to add original programming as it comes through development. ABC’s efforts mirror some of what CBS is doing for its All Access streaming service, which has buzzy original shows, including a Star Trek series and a spinoff of The Good Wife, coming down the line. Both are a sign that networks are trying to shore up their SVOD offerings in response to the strength of Netflix and Hulu, the latter of which has the rights to most ABC shows already. Still, if you don’t have Hulu, now’s your chance to get on the Felicity train. We recommend the pilot, and the Thanksgiving episode, and “Todd Mulcahy” parts one and two.
